The Beautiful Brain: Drawings of Santiago Ramon y Cajal

What a fantastic exhibit of drawings at NYU’s Grey Gallery! Really astounding. Santiago Ramon y Cajal (1852-1934) studied art at an art academy as a teenager before going to medical school–his father, also in medicine, insisted on the change. Cajal’s drawing abilities–and more than that–his gorgeous linework, sometimes delicate and sometimes bold, tell a compelling story about how the brain works. He looked at the brain through a microscope, and then drew what he saw later, sometimes adding to drawings as he figured out more things about how the brain functioned. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology for asserting that “the brain is composed of individual neuron cells rather than a single continuous network.” (from the Grey Gallery exhibition text) A neurologist that was attending the exhibit today with a student entourage, told his group (I was eavesdropping) that the drawings Cajal made in the early 1900s are still used today by students of the brain.

The exhibit is worth seeing not only because of the many Cajal drawings, but also because there is artwork from previous eras, with alternate ideas of how the brain worked, and then modern, lovely MRI and photographic images of the brain that confirm the drawings Cajal made. What a pleasure to see it all together–and you can still get there! It closes March 31st.

Fairy House: The Night Time Scene…

The promised night time coloring scene. I have been having fun coloring a different kind of fairy scene–at night with lanterns and starlight, a wishing well and an ebony bunny rabbit. Fun! This scene was colored with Copic Markers, Prismacolor pencils, and Uniball metallic markers make the silvery moon and stars.

And some Uniball gold opaque marker for the dots on the mushroom and the hardware on the tiny door…

FAIRY HOUSE: A Color, Punch Out and Play Set

My new play sets arrived! New from Pomegranate Publishing: FAIRY HOUSE: A Color, Punch Out and Play Set. I have spent happy hours coloring it and setting it up, ostensibly to photograph it, but after SEVERAL hours have passed, and I haven’t made dinner or done anything else useful, I can fairly say that it is FUN to PLAY with! This is the pastel version. I am still working on a night time scene…

This is the light, pastel version…stay tuned for the night scene!

Lots more to color…

Werner’s Nomenclature of Colors

It finally came! I have been looking at this book on line forever, have asked friends in the antique book business to look for one for me, too. Its Werner’s Nomenclature of Colors: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy and the Arts by P. Syme. It was originally published in 1814, and was a “taxonomic guide to the colors of the natural world.”

You can read more about the original at This Is Colossal, including photos of the original book with its hand painted color chips. But in the meantime, the Smithsonian has released an edition of this book for the likes of me. At $14.95 I can overlook the fact that the color chips are printed and not hand colored…

The colors and their descriptions are like poems: “Wax Yellow: Animal: Larva of large Water Beetle, Vegetable: Greenish Parts of Non-Pareil Apple, Mineral: Semi-Opal.” Or “Yellowish Grey: Animal: Vent Converts of White Rump, Vegetable: Stems of the Barberry, Mineral: Common Calcedony.”

To add to this, the book is nicely bound. The cover is turquoise with an inset cover in which the antique looking title label is inserted. The endpapers are brilliant orange (I am sure this wasn’t like this in the original edition!), and there’s a turquoise ribbon to mark pages.

FAIRY HOUSE: A Color, Punch Out and Play Set

I had a great time at the NY NOW 2018 gift fair as a guest of Pomegranate Communications. And I got to see my new Fairy House: A Color, Punch Out and Play Set! So exciting! Pomegranate has such wonderful things–I especially love all the Charley Harper stuff they have, and the quality of their products is so high. I am honored to be associated with them.

Jennifer’s beautiful coloring of one of the scenes from Fairy House, along with a little chair, a guitar, a mushroom and an armoire filled with shells and acorn cups and teapot. CUTE! I can’;t wait to get my author copies so I can color, too!

Stencil Demo! Scarab Beetles

Happy New Year! Let’s hope for a wonderful new year full of lots of art play, exploration and creativity!

I got interested in making a stencil of scarab beetles when making inkblot beetle cabinets of curiosity. I made the beetle inkblots with black ink on Rives BFK:

And then colored into them with colored pencils.

Then I could cut them out and mount them in a case, in their “family tree:”

So it was natural to make a page of fantasy beetles to stencil with and color into!

Here’s the Scarab Beetles videos, made by my husband Daniel Levy, who filmed my playing around in my journal with various stencils to make a Scarab Beetle page–and made sense of my ramblings!

To  buy this stencil, or any of the other ten stencils I designed, head over to StencilGirl: http://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencils-margaret-peot-s/2039.htm

Monet’s Water Lilies Inspire a Stencil Design

Happy Holidays! Hope you all have some time to sneak away from family and holiday obligations to putter a little in the studio…

This stencil from StencilGirl Products was inspired by Monet’s Waterlilies–that wonderful one in the Museum of Modern Art that I never get tired of looking at. Thanks again to my husband Daniel Levy for his wonderful video editing skills! All ten of my stencil designs, including an Impressionist Textures set of four stencils, are available at http://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencils-margaret-peot-s/2039.htm

Looping Leafy Vines STENCIL VIDEO!

Looping Leafy Vines! This new stencil from me and Stencil Girl Products is available at. This stencil is available, along with a wealth of other interesting stencils from myself and other artists from http://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencils-margaret-peot-s/2039.htm. In this demo, learn how to add interest to your sketchbook journal with one vine stencil–to make a border, to use as a jumping off place for writing and collage, or as a window into elaborating and drawing into stencil marks. You can isolate one vine of this stencil to make a border for a photo album or scrapbook, or use the whole thing to make a looping, leafy design.

Have fun!
